How To Conduct DNA Testing and Where To Send Hair Samples

General Regulations for DNA & Parentage Verification:
Compulsory for all purebred Arabian foals. Not compulsory for Part-bred or Anglo Arabians.

To register a purebred Arabian foal, both parents must already be registered with the Society and SA Studbook, with DNA profiles on record.

Members are advised to use the Onderstepoort Veterinary Genetics Laboratory in Pretoria for DNA testing.

DNA Collection Process:
1. Collect Hair Samples
Pull at least 20 or more hairs from the tail brush, ensuring the roots (hair follicles) are intact.

2. Sample Quality
The ideal sample should consist of clean, dry hair with visible roots.

3. Package the Sample
Place each foal’s hair sample in a separate bank bag or envelope. Mark the bag/envelope clearly with the foal’s name and ID (e.g., “Sidi Keila”).

4. Complete the DNA Sample Form
Fill out the DNA Sample form from Onderstepoort, ensuring both parents’ complete details (prefix, name, registration number, and DNA number) are included. The form can be found on the AHSSA website, under the documents section.

5. Make Payment
The payment should be made directly to the Onderstepoort Veterinary Genetics Laboratory. Banking details are available on the DNA form.

6. Send the Samples
Place the DNA samples (in envelopes or bank bags) and the completed DNA form in an envelope. Use a courier service to send the package to Onderstepoort.

Important: Do not submit fine body or mane hair, as these samples contain insufficient DNA for accurate results.
