Horse Export Process & Regulations

To export a horse, the following process applies:

1. Notify the Society: Inform the Society’s secretary of your intent to export a horse and apply for export. (Forms available on the AHSSA website).

2. Complete Necessary Permits: Fill out the “Livestock Improvement Permit” and “Veterinary Import Permit” forms from the Director: Animal Health. These must be obtained before shipping the horse. For enquiries, contact 012 319 7434 or 012 319 7424. (Forms available on the AHSSA website).

3. Submit Export Application: Send the completed export application, including the horse’s passport or original registration certificate, along with the export fee to the office. Membership status will be verified, and one party must cover the export costs.

4. Council Approval: The application and proof of payment will be submitted to the Council for approval.

5. Secretary Actions: Once approved, the secretary will:
> Sign and stamp the export application.
> Prepare and send an export approval letter.
> Send the 5-generation pedigree, signed application, and approval letter to the Registrar and the member.

Important: Follow up with the Registrar’s office regarding the import permit.

6. WAHO Rule: The export registration certificate (Export Pedigree) must be sent directly from the export country’s registration authority to the import country’s authority.

7. Additional Documents for Pregnant Mares: If exporting a pregnant mare, include:
> Stallion’s DNA profile
> Certified copy of the stallion’s registration certificate
> Covering certificate

8. Final Documentation: The SA Society will send the following documents to the receiving Society:
> WAHO Certificate
> Original Registration Certificate
> DNA Profile
> DNA Parentage Verification Report
> Five-generation Pedigree

The exported horse will be registered in the new country’s Studbook once all required documents are received. The receiving Society will issue a new Registration Certificate to the buyer/new owner.
