How To Register A Stallion As A Breeding Stallion – Register Foals

Before breeding your mare with any stallion (whether your own or from another stud), it is essential to ensure that the stallion is registered as a breeding stallion and that all his certificates are up to date.

A stallion can be registered as a breeding stallion with the Society by submitting the following two certificates from a veterinarian:

1. Clinical Certificate
This certificate confirms the stallion’s suitability for breeding under the Livestock Improvement Act, ensuring the stallion:
Is in good general health
Has no visible genetic defects
Has two normally descended testicles

2. CEM Certificate
A negative CEM (Contagious Equine Metritis) test result is required. The validity of the CEM certificate depends on the breeding method:
Natural Covers: Valid for 5 years; retesting is required every 5 years.
Semen Donor (Artificial Insemination): Annual CEM testing and certification are required.

Important: Progeny from stallions without CEM clearance will not be registered by breeders’ associations. In South Africa, no stallion is allowed to breed without a current CEM clearance certificate.
