Semen Import Process & Regulations
Foals conceived using imported semen in South Africa may be eligible for registration if the following conditions are met:
1. Stallion Permit: The stallion must have a valid Transported/Stored Semen Permit at the time of semen collection.
2. Approved Source: The semen must be collected and imported from an approved country.
3. Studbook Listing: The stallion (sire) must be listed in the Studbook or annual supplement of the source country.
4. DNA Profile: The stallion’s DNA profile must be recorded with the relevant Registry.
5. Compliance with Regulations: The stallion owner must follow World Arabian Horse Organisation rules and source country regulations.
6. Import Permit: Obtain a valid import permit from the Society, and ensure the semen meets South African requirements.
o Stallions must have a valid CEM Certificate and Clinical Certificate.
Process:
1.
Notify the Society’s secretary of your intent to import semen and apply for the import.
2.
Complete the “Livestock Improvement Permit” and “Veterinary Import Permit” forms from the Director: Animal Health. Obtain these permits before shipping the semen (For enquiries, call 012 319 7434 or 012 319 7424). (Forms available on the AHSSA website).
3.
Submit the import application to the office and pay the semen import fee.

The application and payment proof will be submitted to the Council for approval.
5.
Once approved, the secretary will:
> Sign and stamp the import application.
> Prepare a cover letter for import approval.
> Send the signed application and approval letter to the Registrar and member.
> The member submits these documents to the Registrar with proof of payment.
Important: Follow up directly with the Registrar’s office regarding the Import Permit.
